Gemiquin 320 mg Tablet is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, primarily those affecting the respiratory tract.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
320 mg once daily for 5 to 7 days, depending on the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required based on age, but renal function should be considered.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <40 mL/min, the dose should be reduced to 160 mg once daily.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Gemifloxacin works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.

Approximately 60% excreted unchanged in urine and 30% in feces.

Approximately 7-10 hours, allowing for once-daily dosing.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; absolute bioavailability is approximately 71%. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in 0.5-2 hours.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily metabolized by O-glucuronidation and N-acetylation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to gemifloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
- •History of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use.
- •Children and adolescents under 18 years of age (due to potential for cartilage damage).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Potential for enhanced anticoagulant effect, requiring INR monitoring.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of severe tendon disorders.
Antacids, iron supplements, zinc supplements, sucralfate
May significantly reduce the absorption of gemifloxacin. Administer gemifloxacin at least 3 hours before or 2 hours after these agents.
QT-prolonging drugs (e.g., Class IA and III antiarrhythmics, tricyclic antidepressants)
Increased risk of QT prolongation and cardiac arrhythmias.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered. Hemodialysis is not effective for removing gemifloxacin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to potential risk of cartilage damage in the fetus/infant. Use only if potential benefit outweighs the risk.
