Description
Overview of the medicine
Germgurd (Povidone-iodine) is a broad-spectrum antiseptic for skin disinfection, wound management, and prevention of infection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply undiluted or appropriately diluted solution to the affected area as needed, typically 1 to 3 times daily. Allow to dry.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required. Use with caution in elderly patients with pre-existing thyroid conditions.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment due to potential for iodine accumulation.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a small amount to the affected area after cleaning. May be covered with a sterile dressing.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine releases free iodine, which oxidizes microbial cellular components, leading to rapid cell death. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid (within seconds to minutes).
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion of iodine and its metabolites.
Half life
Systemic iodine has a half-life of 2-3 days, but topical application results in very low systemic levels.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption increases with large skin areas, damaged skin, or mucous membranes.
Metabolism
Absorbed iodine is metabolized in the body, primarily converted to iodide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone.
- Thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, goiter).
- Before and after radioiodine therapy.
- In pre-term neonates and infants.
- On extensive burn areas.
Drug Interactions
Hydrogen peroxide
Can inactivate povidone-iodine.
Silver sulfadiazine
May lead to reduced efficacy of both agents.
Mercury-containing compounds
May form corrosive compounds.
Octenidine-containing antiseptics
May cause transient skin discoloration.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is rare with proper topical use. In case of accidental ingestion or extensive application on large open wounds, symptoms of iodine toxicity (e.g., gastrointestinal upset, metabolic acidosis, renal impairment) may occur. Management is supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation due to potential for iodine absorption and effects on fetal/infant thyroid function. Consult a doctor.
