Description
Overview of the medicine
Gide 80 mg Tablet contains Gliclazide, an oral sulfonylurea antidiabetic agent used to manage non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2 diabetes) in adults when dietary measures, physical exercise, and weight reduction alone are not sufficient.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially 40-80 mg daily, taken with breakfast. Dosage may be gradually increased up to a maximum of 320 mg daily in divided doses, depending on blood glucose response. Common maintenance dose is 80-160 mg daily.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but cautious titration is recommended due to potential increased sensitivity to hypoglycemic effects and reduced renal function. Start with a low dose and monitor closely.
Renal_impairment
Mild to moderate renal impairment usually does not require dosage adjustment. For severe impairment, Gliclazide is contraindicated or should be used with extreme caution due to increased risk of hypoglycemia.
How to Take
Take Gide 80 mg Tablet orally, usually once daily with breakfast or the first main meal of the day. Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or divide.
Mechanism of Action
Gliclazide stimulates the release of insulin from the beta cells of the pancreatic islets. It also increases peripheral sensitivity to insulin and reduces hepatic glucose production.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Hypoglycemic effect usually begins within 2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine (60-70% as metabolites) and a small amount (10-20%) in the feces.
Half life
Approximately 8-20 hours (for conventional 80 mg tablets).
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver mainly by CYP2C9 into inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Gliclazide or other sulfonylureas, or to any component of the tablet.
- Type 1 diabetes mellitus (insulin-dependent diabetes).
- Diabetic pre-coma and ketoacidosis.
- Severe renal or hepatic insufficiency.
- Concomitant treatment with miconazole (systemic form).
- Pregnancy and lactation.
Drug Interactions
Miconazole (systemic)
Greatly enhances the hypoglycemic effect, potentially leading to coma.
Danazol, chlorpromazine, glucocorticoids, ritodrine, salbutamol, terbutaline (IV), diuretics, oral contraceptives
May increase blood glucose levels, potentially reducing the hypoglycemic effect of Gliclazide.
Phenylbutazone, alcohol, other antidiabetic agents, beta-blockers, fluconazole, ACE inhibitors, MAO inhibitors, sulfonamides
May potentiate the hypoglycemic effect of Gliclazide.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose of Gliclazide may lead to severe hypoglycemia, which can manifest as sweating, pallor, tremors, anxiety, confusion, or even coma. Management involves immediate administration of glucose (oral for conscious patients, IV glucose for unconscious patients), and close monitoring.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Gliclazide is contraindicated during pregnancy. It is also contraindicated during lactation due to the potential for neonatal hypoglycemia. Consult a doctor for alternative management.

Lab Monitoring
- Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels (fasting, post-prandial).
- Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels every 3-6 months.
- Periodic assessment of renal and hepatic function.
Doctor Notes
- Educate patients thoroughly about the signs, symptoms, and management of hypoglycemia.
- Emphasize the importance of consistent diet, regular exercise, and adherence to medication.
- Monitor renal and hepatic function periodically, especially in elderly patients or those with pre-existing impairments.
- Adjust dose carefully in elderly patients due to increased susceptibility to hypoglycemia.
Patient Guidelines
- Take Gide 80 mg Tablet exactly as prescribed by your doctor, preferably with breakfast.
- Follow your prescribed diet and exercise regimen strictly.
- Monitor your blood glucose levels regularly as instructed by your doctor.
- Be aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia (e.g., sweating, dizziness, confusion) and carry a fast-acting sugar source (like glucose tablets or fruit juice) to treat it.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Continue with your regular dosing schedule.
Driving Precautions
Gide 80 mg Tablet may cause hypoglycemia, which can impair your ability to concentrate and react. If you experience symptoms of hypoglycemia, do not drive or operate machinery until your blood sugar levels stabilize.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain a balanced diet with regular meal times to avoid blood sugar fluctuations.
- Engage in regular physical activity suitable for your condition.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it can interact with Gliclazide and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
