Description
Overview of the medicine
Gitabin 200 mg Injection is a novel broad-spectrum antibiotic indicated for the treatment of severe bacterial infections in adults.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg administered intravenously (IV) over 30-60 minutes once daily. Duration of treatment depends on the type and severity of infection.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function. Monitor renal function closely.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage is required. Initial dose may be 200 mg, followed by adjusted doses based on creatinine clearance. Consult specific guidelines.
How to Take
For intravenous use only. Administer by slow infusion over 30 to 60 minutes. Do not administer as a rapid bolus injection.
Mechanism of Action
Gitabin acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Bactericidal effects typically seen within 30 minutes of administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys via glomerular filtration, with approximately 90% eliminated within 24 hours.
Half life
Elimination half-life is approximately 2-4 hours in individuals with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Metabolism
Undergoes minimal hepatic metabolism. Primarily excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Gitabin or any component of the formulation.
- •Severe renal impairment (unless benefits outweigh risks and dose is appropriately adjusted with close monitoring).
- •Myasthenia gravis (due to potential for neuromuscular blockade).
Drug Interactions
Neuromuscular Blocking Agents
Potential for potentiation of neuromuscular blockade, leading to respiratory depression.
Loop Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity when administered concomitantly.
Other Nephrotoxic Drugs (e.g., NSAIDs, Cyclosporine)
Concurrent use may increase the risk of renal toxicity.
Storage
Store the unopened vials below 25°C (77°F), protect from light. Do not freeze. Reconstituted solution is stable for 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours when refrigerated (2°C to 8°C).
Overdose
In case of overdose, supportive care should be initiated. Hemodialysis may be considered to facilitate removal of Gitabin from the bloodstream, particularly in patients with renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use Gitabin during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if Gitabin is excreted in human milk; caution is advised when administering to a nursing mother.
