Description
Overview of the medicine
Glucodip 50 mg Tablet is an oral antidiabetic medicine used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps to lower blood glucose levels by increasing the excretion of glucose in the urine.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily, taken in the morning, with or without food. The dose may be increased up to 100 mg once daily based on glycemic response and tolerability.
Elderly
No dose adjustment is required based solely on age. However, renal function should be considered.
Renal_impairment
Not recommended for patients with eGFR less than 30 mL/min/1.73m². Dose adjustment may be necessary for eGFR between 30-60 mL/min/1.73m².
How to Take
Take the tablet orally, once daily in the morning, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush, cut, or chew it.
Mechanism of Action
Glucodip selectively inhibits Sodium-Glucose Co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) in the renal tubules, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours of administration, sustained glucose lowering effect.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine (approximately 80%) and feces (approximately 20%).
Half life
Approximately 10-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver via glucuronidation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
- Patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73m²), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), or dialysis.
- Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May increase the risk of dehydration and hypotension.
ACE Inhibitors/ARBs
Potential for increased risk of hypotension or renal impairment, especially in patients with existing renal issues.
Insulin and Insulin Secretagogues (e.g., Sulfonylureas)
Increased risk of hypoglycemia when co-administered; dose reduction of insulin/sulfonylurea may be necessary.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In the event of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. Glucodip is unlikely to be removed by dialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C/D. Not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, due to potential adverse effects on renal development. Avoid during lactation as it is unknown if it is excreted in human milk.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials have demonstrated efficacy in lowering HbA1c and improved cardiovascular and renal outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes. Ongoing studies are exploring its long-term effects.
Lab Monitoring
- Renal function (eGFR) should be assessed before initiating treatment and periodically thereafter.
- Blood glucose levels (HbA1c, FPG) should be monitored regularly.
- Fluid status and electrolytes should be monitored, especially in patients at risk for dehydration.
Doctor Notes
- Assess renal function (eGFR) prior to initiation and periodically during treatment.
- Educate patients on symptoms of DKA and genital mycotic infections.
- Consider dose adjustments for concomitant use with insulin or sulfonylureas to prevent hypoglycemia.
Patient Guidelines
- Take Glucodip exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration.
- Monitor your blood glucose levels regularly as advised.
- Be aware of the symptoms of urinary tract or genital infections and report them to your doctor.
- Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis (e.g., nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing).
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Glucodip generally does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if used in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, which can impair concentration and reaction time. Patients should be advised to take precautions.
Lifestyle Advice
- Follow a balanced diet plan recommended by your healthcare provider.
- Engage in regular physical activity.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
