Description
Overview of the medicine
Glyset-Mix 100 IU Injection is a biphasic insulin preparation containing both fast-acting and intermediate-acting human insulin. It is used to improve glycemic control in adult and pediatric patients with diabetes mellitus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Individualized based on patient's metabolic needs, blood glucose monitoring, and HbA1c goals. Typically administered subcutaneously 15-30 minutes before a meal, once or twice daily.
Elderly
Dosage may need to be adjusted carefully in elderly patients due to potential renal impairment and increased sensitivity to insulin.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required; lower doses may be necessary due to reduced insulin clearance.
How to Take
Administer subcutaneously into the abdominal wall, thigh, upper arm, or buttock. Rotate injection sites within the same region to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy. Do not administer intravenously or intramuscularly. Inject 15-30 minutes before a meal.
Mechanism of Action
Insulin lowers blood glucose by stimulating peripheral glucose uptake by skeletal muscle and fat, and by inhibiting hepatic glucose production. It also inhibits lipolysis and proteolysis, and enhances protein synthesis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
10-20 minutes (soluble component)
Excretion
Mainly renal.
Half life
Variable, depends on absorption and elimination. Functional half-life for glucose lowering is longer.
Absorption
Rapid absorption of soluble insulin, slower absorption of isophane insulin. Absorption rate can vary based on injection site.
Metabolism
Primarily liver and kidneys, also muscle and adipose tissue.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- During episodes of hypoglycemia
- Hypersensitivity to human insulin or any of its excipients
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
May potentiate the glucose-lowering effect of insulin.
Beta-blockers
May mask symptoms of hypoglycemia and delay recovery from hypoglycemia.
Corticosteroids
May decrease insulin's glucose-lowering effect, requiring increased insulin dosage.
Oral Hypoglycemics
Increased risk of hypoglycemia when used concomitantly.
Storage
Store in a refrigerator (2°C - 8°C). Do not freeze. Protect from light. Once opened, store at room temperature (below 25°C) for up to 28 days.
Overdose
Overdose leads to hypoglycemia. Mild episodes can be managed with oral glucose. Severe hypoglycemia requires glucagon injection or intravenous glucose.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Insulin is the preferred treatment for diabetes in pregnancy. Close monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential. It is also compatible with breastfeeding.
