Description
Overview of the medicine
Hartsol Injection is an isotonic solution of sodium chloride used for fluid and electrolyte replacement in various clinical conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage is highly individualized based on the patient's age, weight, clinical condition, fluid and electrolyte requirements, and concomitant therapy. Typically, 500 mL to 3 liters per 24 hours.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but with careful monitoring for fluid overload and electrolyte imbalances, especially in patients with cardiac or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with extreme caution. Dosage should be carefully adjusted and fluid/electrolyte balance closely monitored to avoid fluid overload and hypernatremia.
How to Take
Administered intravenously by slow infusion, strictly under medical supervision. The rate of infusion should be adjusted according to the patient's clinical needs.
Mechanism of Action
Provides water and sodium chloride, which are essential for maintaining osmotic pressure and extracellular fluid volume. It replaces lost fluid and electrolytes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate upon administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys. Excess sodium is excreted in urine, and water balance is regulated through renal mechanisms.
Half life
Varies depending on the patient's fluid status, renal function, and rate of administration. Sodium is tightly regulated by renal mechanisms.
Absorption
Rapidly distributes throughout the extracellular fluid compartment following intravenous administration.
Metabolism
Sodium chloride is not metabolized in the conventional sense but is handled by physiological regulatory mechanisms.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipient
- Hypernatremia
- Fluid overload, especially pulmonary edema or severe congestive heart failure
- Metabolic acidosis (unless chloride deficiency is present)
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Sodium chloride can increase renal excretion of lithium, potentially reducing its therapeutic effect. Monitor lithium levels.
Corticosteroids
May lead to increased sodium retention and edema, especially with long-term use.
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
Concomitant use with sodium chloride may lead to changes in electrolyte balance, requiring close monitoring.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Do not freeze. Protect from excessive heat and direct light. Do not use if solution is cloudy or contains visible particles.
Overdose
Overdose can lead to fluid overload (hypervolemia), edema (including pulmonary and peripheral edema), and hypernatremia. Management involves immediate discontinuation of the infusion, administration of diuretics, and correction of electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation when medically indicated. Fluid and electrolyte balance should be carefully monitored.

- Blood pressure and heart rate
Doctor Notes
- Always monitor patient's fluid status, vital signs, serum electrolytes, and renal function during administration.
- Administer with caution in patients with heart failure, severe renal insufficiency, or conditions associated with sodium retention.
- Check for compatibility if used as a vehicle for other medications.
Patient Guidelines
- This medicine is administered by a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinic setting.
- Report any unusual symptoms or discomfort immediately to your doctor or nurse.
- The rate and amount of infusion will be carefully monitored by your medical team.
Missed Dose Advice
Not applicable as Hartsol Injection is typically administered in a controlled clinical setting by healthcare professionals.
Driving Precautions
Hartsol Injection is administered in a medical setting and does not typically affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
