Description
Overview of the medicine
Hemobin-200 mg Syrup is an iron polymaltose complex preparation combined with folic acid and B-vitamins, used for the treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anemia and nutritional deficiencies.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 teaspoonfuls (5-10 ml) once or twice daily, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, close monitoring recommended.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment typically required, but use with caution in severe cases.
How to Take
To be taken orally, preferably after meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort.
Mechanism of Action
Iron polymaltose complex provides iron in a non-ionic, macromolecular form, allowing controlled absorption and minimizing gastrointestinal side effects. Folic acid is essential for erythropoiesis, and B-vitamins play roles in metabolism and blood cell formation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement usually seen within 2-4 weeks with consistent use.
Excretion
Small amounts of iron are excreted through feces, urine, and sweat. Folic acid is excreted via urine.
Half life
Iron half-life depends on body stores. Folic acid is about 3-9 hours.
Absorption
Controlled absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal tract due to polymaltose complex. Folic acid and B-vitamins are readily absorbed.
Metabolism
Iron is transported by transferrin and incorporated into hemoglobin, myoglobin, and ferritin. Folic acid is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the syrup
- •Iron overload conditions (e.g., hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis)
- •Parenteral iron therapy
- •Non-iron deficiency anemias (e.g., megaloblastic anemia not due to folic acid deficiency, aplastic anemia)
Drug Interactions
Antacids
May reduce iron absorption. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Levothyroxine
Iron may impair absorption of levothyroxine. Administer several hours apart.
Tetracyclines, Fluoroquinolones
Iron may reduce absorption of these antibiotics. Separate by at least 2-3 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea. Severe cases may lead to shock, metabolic acidosis, and hepatic necrosis. Management involves gastric lavage, supportive care, and chelation therapy (e.g., deferoxamine) if necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and beneficial for treating and preventing anemia during pregnancy and lactation. Consult a physician.
