Description
Overview of the medicine
Hemofix 33 mg Tablet is an iron supplement used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia. It contains elemental iron in a highly absorbable form like Ferrous Bisglycinate, which helps replenish iron stores in the body and supports the production of red blood cells.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 1 tablet once daily, or as directed by the physician. Duration depends on the severity of deficiency.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with concomitant diseases and polypharmacy. Consult physician.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for mild to moderate impairment. For severe impairment, use with caution and monitor iron levels. Consult physician.
How to Take
Swallow the tablet whole with water. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food might reduce gastrointestinal upset. Avoid taking with dairy products, tea, coffee, or antacids, as they can reduce iron absorption. Ideally, take it with Vitamin C-rich foods or a Vitamin C supplement to enhance absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, myoglobin, and several enzymes. Hemofix 33 mg provides elemental iron, which is absorbed in the duodenum and proximal jejunum, transported via transferrin, and utilized for erythropoiesis (red blood cell formation). Ferrous bisglycinate offers superior bioavailability and less gastrointestinal irritation compared to traditional iron salts.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects (increase in hemoglobin) are typically observed within 2-4 weeks, with full correction of anemia taking several months.
Excretion
Excretion of iron is minimal and occurs primarily through bile, feces, urine, and desquamation of cells (skin, hair, nails). Daily iron loss is very small (0.5-1 mg).
Half life
Iron is primarily stored in the body and recycled; it does not have a distinct plasma half-life like many drugs. Its elimination is minimal.
Absorption
Ferrous bisglycinate is highly absorbed, typically 2-4 times more efficiently than ferrous sulfate, primarily in the duodenum and proximal jejunum. Absorption is enhanced by Vitamin C and reduced by certain foods and antacids.
Metabolism
Iron is not metabolized in the traditional sense. It is incorporated into hemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzymes, or stored as ferritin and hemosiderin.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder)
- Hemosiderosis
- Other anemias not caused by iron deficiency (e.g., megaloblastic anemia without iron deficiency, hemolytic anemia)
- Known hypersensitivity to iron preparations or any component of the tablet
Drug Interactions
Quinolones
Iron can decrease the absorption of quinolone antibiotics. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Antacids/PPIs
Antacids and Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) can reduce iron absorption. Avoid concomitant use or separate by several hours.
Levothyroxine
Iron can reduce the absorption of levothyroxine. Separate administration by at least 4 hours.
Tetracyclines
Iron can decrease the absorption of tetracyclines. Separate administration by at least 2-3 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of iron overdose include severe gastrointestinal irritation (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea), lethargy, shock, metabolic acidosis, and cardiovascular collapse. Seek immediate medical attention. Treatment involves gastric lavage, chelation therapy (e.g., deferoxamine), and supportive care.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Hemofix is generally considered safe and often necessary during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased iron requirements and prevent anemia. Always consult a healthcare provider before use.

Doctor Notes
- Assess patient's iron status (Hb, ferritin) before and during treatment.
- Advise patients on diet and factors affecting iron absorption.
- Educate on potential side effects like dark stools and constipation management.
- Monitor for signs of iron overload in long-term therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Take the tablet as directed by your doctor.
- Do not crush or chew the tablet.
- Store at room temperature away from moisture and direct heat.
- Keep out of reach of children to prevent accidental iron poisoning.
- Report any severe gastrointestinal issues or allergic reactions to your doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
