Description
Overview of the medicine
Hemostop 500 mg Capsule contains Tranexamic Acid, an antifibrinolytic agent used to prevent or reduce excessive bleeding in various medical conditions, including heavy menstrual bleeding, surgical procedures, and certain bleeding disorders.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Menorrhagia: 1 g three times daily for up to 4 days during menstruation. Surgical bleeding: 1-1.5 g two to three times daily. Consult physician for specific dosages.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with impaired renal function. Otherwise, adult dosage generally applies.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction is required in patients with renal impairment due to accumulation risk. (e.g., CrCl 30-59 mL/min: 15 mg/kg twice daily; CrCl 10-29 mL/min: 15 mg/kg daily).
How to Take
Oral administration. Capsules should be swallowed whole with water, with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding dose and duration.
Mechanism of Action
Tranexamic acid acts by inhibiting the fibrinolytic system. It reversibly binds to plasminogen and plasmin, preventing them from binding to fibrin and thus inhibiting the dissolution of fibrin clots. This helps stabilize existing clots and reduce bleeding.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours for oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily renal (glomerular filtration).
Half life
Approximately 2-11 hours (dose-dependent, varies by route and renal function).
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, with a bioavailability of approximately 30-50%.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Active intravascular clotting
- Subarachnoid hemorrhage (unless specific conditions apply)
- Severe renal impairment (without dose adjustment)
- History of convulsions
- Hypersensitivity to tranexamic acid
Drug Interactions
Oral Contraceptives / Estrogens
Increased risk of thrombosis.
Thrombolytic agents (e.g., Alteplase, Urokinase)
Antagonistic effect, reduced efficacy of thrombolytics.
Factor IX complex concentrates / anti-inhibitor coagulant concentrates
Increased risk of thrombosis.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, orthostatic symptoms (e.g., dizziness upon standing), and hypotension. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage or induced vomiting if recent ingestion, and adequate fluid replacement.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; use with caution during lactation. Consult doctor.

Lab Monitoring
- Regular monitoring of renal function in patients with kidney impairment
- Monitoring for signs of thromboembolic events (e.g., leg swelling, chest pain, vision changes)
Doctor Notes
- Consider renal function for dose adjustments.
- Assess thrombotic risk factors before prescribing, especially with concomitant hormonal contraceptives.
- Advise patients to report visual disturbances or any signs of thrombotic events promptly.
Patient Guidelines
- Take as directed by your doctor.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
- Report any unusual bleeding or signs of clotting immediately.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
