Description
Overview of the medicine
Hexiscrub-4 Hand Rub is an antiseptic solution used for rapid and effective surgical and hygienic hand disinfection. It contains Chlorhexidine Gluconate, which has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, and Ethyl Alcohol, a fast-acting disinfectant. It provides sustained antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For hygienic hand disinfection: Apply 3 ml of solution to clean, dry hands, rub thoroughly for 30 seconds, ensuring coverage of all surfaces. For surgical hand disinfection: Apply 5 ml twice (total 10 ml) to clean, dry hands and forearms, rub thoroughly for 1.5-2 minutes until dry.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply undiluted solution to clean, dry hands. Rub thoroughly for the specified duration until dry, ensuring all hand surfaces are covered. Do not rinse off.
Mechanism of Action
Chlorhexidine Gluconate acts by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, leading to leakage of intracellular components and eventual cell death. Ethyl alcohol denatures proteins and solubilizes lipids, causing cell lysis and rapid bactericidal action.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate (due to alcohol), sustained (due to chlorhexidine).
Excretion
Mainly excreted via feces for any systemically absorbed amount. Topically, it is washed off or wears off.
Half life
Not applicable for topical use for systemic half-life. Residual activity on skin up to 6 hours for chlorhexidine.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. A small amount may be absorbed through damaged skin.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized systemically due to minimal absorption. What is absorbed is primarily metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine, alcohol, or any other component.
- Do not use on open wounds or damaged skin.
- Avoid contact with eyes, ears, mouth, or other mucous membranes.
Drug Interactions
Other topical antiseptics
Avoid concurrent use with other topical antiseptics (e.g., iodine compounds) as they may inactivate chlorhexidine or cause irritation.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Keep away from direct sunlight, heat, and open flames. Keep container tightly closed.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion may lead to alcohol intoxication. Excessive and prolonged skin exposure may lead to skin irritation or sensitization. In case of ingestion, seek immediate medical attention. For skin irritation, discontinue use and wash with water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Minimal systemic absorption, generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy and lactation. However, consult a healthcare professional if concerned.
