Description
Overview of the medicine
Hisnul 2 mg syrup contains Salbutamol, a short-acting beta-2 adrenoceptor agonist primarily used for the quick relief of bronchospasm in conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 2-4 mg (5-10 ml) 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
Lower doses may be considered; consult a physician.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment for renal impairment is usually necessary, but caution is advised in severe cases.
How to Take
Administer orally. Can be taken with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenoceptors located in the bronchial smooth muscles, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscle and bronchodilation. It also inhibits the release of mast cell mediators.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30 minutes (oral)
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as metabolites and unchanged drug.
Half life
4-6 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract after oral administration.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the syrup
- Threatened abortion (oral salbutamol is contraindicated for preterm labor if uterine contractions persist despite treatment)
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May lead to hypokalemia, especially when combined with high doses of salbutamol.
Beta-blockers
May inhibit the bronchodilatory effect of salbutamol and can cause severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients.
MAOIs and TCAs
Increased risk of cardiovascular effects.
Other sympathomimetics
Additive effects, increased risk of side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremor, headache, palpitations, and hypokalemia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; consider cardioselective beta-blockers for severe cardiac effects if necessary, but use with extreme caution in patients with bronchospasm.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised during lactation.
