Overview of the medicine
Histacet 5 mg syrup contains Cetirizine, a non-drowsy antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, and hives. It is suitable for both adults and children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and adolescents 12 years and older: 10 mg (10 mL) once daily. Children 6-11 years: 5 mg (5 mL) once daily or 2.5 mg (2.5 mL) twice daily. Children 2-5 years: 2.5 mg (2.5 mL) once daily; may be increased to a maximum of 5 mg (5 mL) daily, given as 2.5 mg every 12 hours.
Elderly
No dose adjustment generally required for elderly with normal renal function. For elderly with impaired renal function, dosage should be adjusted.
Renal_impairment
Moderate to severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <50 mL/min): 5 mg (5 mL) once daily. Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min): not recommended.
How to Take
Administer orally. Can be taken with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or oral syringe for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and highly selective H1-receptor antagonist. It prevents the effects of histamine by competitively blocking H1 receptors, thereby reducing allergic symptoms. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Primarily excreted unchanged in urine (about 70%) and feces (about 10%).

Approximately 8-11 hours in adults; shorter in children (e.g., 6 hours in children 6-12 years).

Metabolism
Undergoes limited hepatic metabolism (about 10-15%) to an inactive metabolite.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cetirizine, Hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives
- •Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min)
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
Small decrease in cetirizine clearance, but unlikely to be clinically significant.
Central nervous system depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
Increased risk of drowsiness and CNS depression.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, tachycardia, tremor, headache, confusion, dizziness, malaise, mydriasis, pruritus, restlessness, urinary retention. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; gastric lavage may be considered if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Cetirizine is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
