Description
Overview of the medicine
Histin 4 mg tablet contains Chlorpheniramine Maleate, a first-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and common cold. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
4 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 24 mg in 24 hours.
Elderly
Lower doses may be required, e.g., 2 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 12 mg in 24 hours, due to increased susceptibility to side effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose reduction may be necessary in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral. May be taken with or without food. To reduce stomach upset, take with food or milk.
Mechanism of Action
Chlorpheniramine Maleate is a competitive antagonist of H1-histamine receptors. It binds to H1 receptors and prevents histamine from binding, thereby inhibiting the effects of histamine such as vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, itching, and bronchoconstriction.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
30-60 minutes
Excretion
Excreted primarily in the urine, mainly as metabolites; a small amount is excreted unchanged.
Half life
12-43 hours (variable)
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by demethylation and hydroxylation.

CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids)
Increased sedation and central nervous system depression.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
