Description
Overview of the medicine
An inactivated vaccine used to prevent infections caused by certain types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which can lead to cervical cancer, genital warts, and other HPV-related diseases.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For individuals aged 15-45 years, a 3-dose schedule (0, 2, and 6 months) is usually recommended.
Elderly
Data on efficacy and safety in individuals over 45 years are limited, and routine vaccination is not generally recommended.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustments are required for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer intramuscularly into the deltoid region of the upper arm. Do not administer intravenously, subcutaneously, or intradermally.
Mechanism of Action
Induces an immune response, leading to the production of neutralizing antibodies against the L1 capsid proteins of the specific HPV types included in the vaccine. These antibodies prevent subsequent infection by blocking the virus from entering host cells.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Protective antibody levels are typically achieved within 1-2 months after the completion of the full vaccination series.
Excretion
Not applicable. The vaccine components are eliminated as part of normal cellular turnover and immune processing.
Half life
Not applicable for the vaccine itself. However, antibody persistence (a measure similar to half-life for immune protection) for HPV vaccines is observed for at least 10-12 years, and often longer.
Absorption
Administered intramuscularly, the vaccine antigens are processed by antigen-presenting cells to initiate an immune response. Systemic absorption of the intact vaccine is not relevant to its mechanism of action.
Metabolism
The vaccine antigens are not metabolized in the traditional pharmacological sense; rather, they stimulate an immune response.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients of the vaccine
- •Previous severe allergic reaction to an HPV vaccine
- •Acute severe febrile illness (vaccination should be postponed until recovery)
Drug Interactions
Other vaccines
Can be co-administered with other vaccines (e.g., Tdap, MenACWY, influenza vaccine) at different injection sites.
Storage
Store in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze. Protect from light.
Overdose
Overdose is highly unlikely with a vaccine. In case of accidental administration of a higher dose, observe for increased local or systemic reactions and manage symptomatically.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Routine vaccination is generally not recommended during pregnancy. If pregnancy is discovered during the vaccination series, subsequent doses should be postponed until after delivery. Lactation: Studies suggest that HPV vaccines can be administered to lactating women.
