Description
Overview of the medicine
Hydrogen Peroxide 6% w/v solution is a common antiseptic and disinfectant used for minor cuts, scrapes, and as a mouth rinse to help remove mucus or other oral irritations. It works by releasing oxygen, which cleanses wounds and kills bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For topical antiseptic use: Apply to the affected area 1-3 times daily or as needed. For oral rinse: Dilute with an equal amount of water (e.g., 6% to 3%), swish in the mouth for 1 minute, then spit out. Do not swallow. Repeat up to 4 times daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required as it is for topical/local use with negligible systemic absorption.
How to Take
For topical use, apply directly to the wound or area of concern. For oral rinse, dilute with an equal amount of water before use, swish in the mouth, and then spit out. Do not swallow. Avoid contact with eyes and internal use.
Mechanism of Action
Hydrogen peroxide acts as an oxidizing agent. When it comes into contact with organic matter, particularly tissue catalase, it rapidly decomposes into water and oxygen. The nascent oxygen released has an oxidizing effect, creating an environment that is detrimental to anaerobic bacteria and aiding in the mechanical debridement of wounds by loosening debris.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate upon application.
Excretion
Not applicable as systemic absorption is minimal and it's locally decomposed.
Half life
Rapidly decomposed at the site of application; not relevant for systemic half-life.
Absorption
Systemic absorption is negligible when applied topically to intact skin. Minimal absorption may occur through broken skin or mucous membranes but is rapidly metabolized.
Metabolism
Rapidly broken down into water and oxygen by tissue catalase.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to hydrogen peroxide.
- •Deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns (consult a doctor).
- •Use in enclosed body cavities, as the oxygen released can cause tissue damage or gas embolism.
- •Do not use in the eye.
Drug Interactions
Reducing agents
Can neutralize the oxidizing effect.
Potassium Permanganate
Decomposition of both substances.
Heavy metal salts (e.g., Silver nitrate)
May reduce antiseptic efficacy of hydrogen peroxide.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C), away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid freezing.
Overdose
Topical overdose may cause skin irritation, blistering, or bleaching. Ingesting hydrogen peroxide can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, abdominal pain, and in severe cases, gas embolism, esophageal damage, or respiratory distress. Seek immediate medical attention if ingested.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy and lactation. However, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before use.
