Description
Overview of the medicine
IMU-D ODT 2000 IU Tablet contains Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), a vital fat-soluble vitamin. It is essential for the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism, promoting strong bones and teeth, and supporting immune system function. The ODT form allows for convenient oral administration without water.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For Vitamin D deficiency: 2000 IU (1 tablet) once daily, or as directed by a physician. Maintenance dose may vary.
Elderly
Similar to adults, with careful monitoring of Vitamin D levels and calcium status.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required based on serum calcium, phosphate, and parathyroid hormone levels. Consult physician.
How to Take
Place the tablet on the tongue and allow it to dissolve completely. Swallow with saliva. No water is required. It can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) is a precursor that is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to the active form 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol). Calcitriol acts as a hormone to regulate calcium and phosphate homeostasis by promoting their absorption from the intestine, reabsorption in the kidneys, and mobilization from bone.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects on calcium homeostasis develop over days to weeks.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via bile into feces; some urinary excretion.
Half life
The half-life of 25-hydroxyvitamin D is 2-3 weeks.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the small intestine. Absorption is enhanced by dietary fat.
Metabolism
Hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxycholecalciferol and further in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cholecalciferol or any component of the tablet
- •Hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels)
- •Hypervitaminosis D (excessive Vitamin D levels)
- •Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones, especially with hypercalcemia)
Drug Interactions
Corticosteroids
May reduce the effects of Vitamin D.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
Cardiac glycosides (e.g., Digoxin)
Hypercalcemia induced by Vitamin D may increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias.
Anticonvulsants (e.g., Phenytoin, Barbiturates)
May increase Vitamin D metabolism and reduce its effectiveness.
Bile acid sequestrants (e.g., Cholestyramine), Mineral oil, Orlistat
May reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins including Vitamin D.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels), nausea, vomiting, weakness, polyuria, polydipsia, and in severe cases, renal impairment. Treatment involves discontinuing the drug, hydration, and in some cases, corticosteroids or calcitonin. Immediate medical attention is required.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Vitamin D is essential during pregnancy and lactation. However, excessive doses should be avoided as hypercalcemia can be harmful to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor for appropriate dosage.
