Description
Overview of the medicine
Iracet is used to improve cognitive functions such as memory, learning, and attention. It is also prescribed for cortical myoclonus.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For cortical myoclonus: initially 7.2 g daily in 2-3 divided doses, increased by 4.8 g/day every 3-4 days up to a maximum of 24 g/day. For cognitive impairment: 2.4 g to 4.8 g daily in 2-3 divided doses.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but adjust dose based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction necessary based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Oral administration, with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Piracetam is believed to act on neuronal and vascular systems, improving the function of acetylcholine neurotransmission and enhancing cell membrane fluidity. It also enhances brain metabolism and protects against hypoxia.

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to piracetam or any excipients
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 20 ml/min)
- Cerebral hemorrhage
- Huntington's chorea
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Concomitant use with piracetam may prolong prothrombin time; close monitoring is recommended.
Thyroid hormones
Concomitant use may increase body weight, tremor, and confusion.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In cases of overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation unless clearly necessary, as piracetam crosses the placental barrier and is excreted in breast milk. Consult a doctor.
