Description
Overview of the medicine
K-Pol 500 mg Tablet contains paracetamol, a widely used medication for relieving mild to moderate pain and reducing fever. It is effective for headaches, muscle aches, backaches, toothaches, colds, flu, and menstrual pain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Oral: 500 mg to 1000 mg every 4-6 hours as needed. Maximum 4000 mg in 24 hours.
Elderly
Oral: Similar to adult dosage, but caution with reduced hepatic/renal function. Max 3000 mg in 24 hours advised.
Renal_impairment
Dosage interval may need to be extended (e.g., 6-8 hours for severe impairment). Consult a doctor.
How to Take
Take K-Pol tablet orally with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew extended-release tablets.
Mechanism of Action
Paracetamol is thought to work primarily by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system, which contributes to its analgesic (pain-relieving) and antipyretic (fever-reducing) effects. Its peripheral anti-inflammatory activity is minimal.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine as glucuronide and sulfate conjugates, with less than 5% excreted as unchanged paracetamol.
Half life
1 to 3 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver (hepatic metabolism) via conjugation with glucuronic acid and sulfate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to paracetamol or any component of the formulation
- Severe hepatic impairment or active liver disease
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Chronic alcohol consumption increases the risk of hepatotoxicity with paracetamol.
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect, leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Monitor INR.
Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin
May increase the metabolism of paracetamol, reducing its effectiveness and potentially increasing hepatotoxicity.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and loss of appetite, potentially followed by liver damage (jaundice, dark urine, malaise). Seek immediate medical attention. Treatment involves gastric lavage and administration of N-acetylcysteine (NAC).
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation when used at recommended doses for the shortest possible duration. However, it is always advisable to consult a doctor before use.
