Description
Overview of the medicine
Ketocid 600 mg Tablet contains Ketoprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever. It is commonly prescribed for conditions like arthritis, muscle pain, menstrual cramps, and post-operative pain.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For sustained-release 600 mg tablet: 600 mg once daily. For immediate release, maximum 300 mg/day in divided doses.
Elderly
Reduced dosage recommended due to increased risk of adverse effects, especially renal and gastrointestinal. Start with lower doses and monitor closely.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is necessary. Contraindicated in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break extended-release tablets.
Mechanism of Action
Ketoprofen inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by blocking cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes. Prostaglandins are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever, so their inhibition leads to the therapeutic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Analgesic effect within 30-60 minutes; anti-inflammatory effects may take longer, up to several days.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine (about 50-80%) as glucuronide conjugates; a small amount is excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 1.5-2.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by conjugation with glucuronic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ketoprofen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs
- •Active gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer
- •Severe heart failure
- •Severe renal or hepatic impairment
- •Third trimester of pregnancy
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Increased plasma lithium levels, leading to toxicity.
Diuretics
Reduced diuretic and antihypertensive effects, increased risk of renal impairment.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate toxicity.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
Increased risk of bleeding.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, GI bleeding, hypotension, and respiratory depression. Management involves supportive care, gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and symptomatic treatment. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoid in the third trimester of pregnancy due to risk of premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus and renal dysfunction. Use with caution in the first and second trimesters only if potential benefit outweighs risk. Excreted in breast milk; use with caution during lactation, or consider alternatives.
