Description
Overview of the medicine
Ketozole 2% Medicated Bar is an antifungal soap containing ketoconazole, used for the topical treatment of various fungal infections of the skin and scalp, such as tinea versicolor, seborrheic dermatitis, and ringworm.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Wet the affected area(s). Lather the medicated bar and gently massage it onto the affected skin. Leave it on for 3-5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. Use once daily for 2-4 weeks or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients. Follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is negligible.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply to the affected area(s) of skin or scalp. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
Mechanism of Action
Ketoconazole inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, by interfering with fungal cytochrome P450 activity. This leads to increased permeability and leakage of cellular contents, ultimately resulting in fungal cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic improvement may be seen within days to weeks, depending on the infection type and severity.
Excretion
Not applicable for topical use due to minimal systemic absorption.
Half life
Not applicable for topical use due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Systemic absorption after topical application is negligible. Only minimal amounts of ketoconazole are detectable in plasma.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism due to negligible absorption.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ketoconazole or any component of the formulation.
- Ophthalmic use (avoid contact with eyes).
Drug Interactions
Systemic Drugs
Topical ketoconazole has negligible systemic absorption, so drug interactions with systemic medications are highly unlikely.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical application. If accidentally ingested, seek medical attention immediately. No specific antidote is available.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use with caution during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether topical ketoconazole is excreted in breast milk; however, systemic absorption is minimal. Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or lactation.
