Description
Overview of the medicine
Labenac SR is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) primarily used to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation in various conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and acute musculoskeletal disorders. Its sustained-release formulation ensures prolonged action.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically one 100 mg SR tablet once daily, preferably with food.
Elderly
Lower doses or careful monitoring may be required, especially in those with renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose reduction may be necessary. Avoid in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, preferably with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Diclofenac inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, leading to a reduction in prostaglandin synthesis, which are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours for pain relief, but full anti-inflammatory effects may take longer.
Excretion
Excreted mainly via urine (approx. 60%) and bile (approx. 30%) as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 1-2 hours (terminal half-life), but its clinical effect lasts longer due to sustained release.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, with SR formulation designed for sustained release over 24 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by hydroxylation and glucuronidation.
