Description
Overview of the medicine
Lacrigel-OSD is an ophthalmic gel used to relieve dryness, irritation, and discomfort associated with dry eyes. It acts as a lubricant to moisten the eye's surface.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1 drop into the conjunctival sac 3-4 times daily or as needed. Gently pull down the lower eyelid and apply the drop without touching the eye with the dropper tip.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is needed for patients with renal impairment, as systemic absorption is negligible.
How to Take
Wash hands thoroughly before use. Tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid to form a pouch, and instill one drop without touching the tip of the dropper to your eye or any other surface. Close your eye gently for a moment. Remove contact lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
Mechanism of Action
Carbomer in Lacrigel-OSD forms a protective, lubricating film over the ocular surface, stabilizing the tear film and increasing its break-up time, thereby providing prolonged relief from dry eye symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immediate upon application.
Excretion
Eliminated from the ocular surface through normal tear flow and blinking.
Half life
Not applicable for systemic circulation; cleared from ocular surface through blinking and tear drainage.
Absorption
Systemic absorption of Carbomer from topical ophthalmic administration is negligible due to its high molecular weight and lack of penetration through the corneal barrier.
Metabolism
Not metabolized systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Carbomer or any other ingredients of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic medications
If you are using other eye drops, instill Lacrigel-OSD at least 15 minutes after the other medication to allow each to be absorbed properly without dilution.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ophthalmic preparations. If excessive gel is applied, it can be rinsed from the eye with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Carbomer ophthalmic gels are generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation due to minimal systemic absorption. However, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use.
