Description
Overview of the medicine
Laxibat 5 mg Tablet contains Bisacodyl, a stimulant laxative used for the short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel preparation before medical procedures like colonoscopy. It works by increasing bowel movements and promoting evacuation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For constipation: 5-10 mg orally once daily, usually at night.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution is advised in frail elderly patients due to risk of electrolyte imbalance.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally with water, preferably at night to produce a bowel movement in the morning. Do not chew the tablet. Do not take with milk or antacids within one hour, as this may cause stomach irritation and premature dissolution of the enteric coating.
Mechanism of Action
Bisacodyl acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate sensory nerve endings, which increases peristaltic contractions of the colon. It also increases water and electrolyte secretion into the intestinal lumen, leading to softer stools and easier passage.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral: 6-12 hours; Rectal: 15-60 minutes.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via feces (unabsorbed drug) and urine (metabolites).
Half life
The half-life of the active metabolite BHPM is approximately 16 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; undergoes enterohepatic recirculation. It is primarily absorbed after hydrolysis to the active metabolite, bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM).
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to the active metabolite BHPM, which is then conjugated with glucuronic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis, acute inflammatory bowel diseases)
- Severe dehydration
- Intestinal obstruction or ileus
- Undiagnosed abdominal pain
- Hypersensitivity to Bisacodyl or any excipients
Drug Interactions
Diuretics/Corticosteroids
Concurrent use may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance, especially hypokalemia.
Antacids/H2 blockers/Proton pump inhibitors
May cause premature dissolution of the enteric coating and lead to gastric irritation. Do not take within one hour of Bisacodyl.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and significant fluid and electrolyte loss (especially potassium). Management involves supportive care, correction of fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk. Limited data suggest minimal absorption, so it is unlikely to cause harm during lactation, but use with caution. Consult a doctor.
