Description
Overview of the medicine
Laxocon contains Sodium Picosulfate, a stimulant laxative used for the short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel preparation before medical procedures.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
5-10 mg once daily at bedtime.
Elderly
Start with lower dose, 5 mg once daily, adjust as needed.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required, but use with caution.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably at bedtime with water. Do not chew or crush tablets.
Mechanism of Action
Sodium Picosulfate is a prodrug that is activated by bacterial enzymes in the colon to form bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM). BHPM stimulates colonic peristalsis and increases water and electrolyte secretion into the intestinal lumen, leading to laxative action.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
6-12 hours
Excretion
Primarily fecal excretion of active metabolite; small amount excreted renally.
Half life
Not directly applicable for active metabolite due to local action; plasma half-life of parent compound is short.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption of the prodrug; converted to active metabolite (BHPM) in the colon.
Metabolism
Converted by colonic bacteria to BHPM, then enterohepatic recirculation of BHPM.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate or any excipients
- Acute abdominal conditions (e.g., appendicitis, severe dehydration)

Drug Interactions
Antibiotics
May reduce laxative effect by altering gut flora.
Cardiac glycosides
Increased sensitivity to glycosides due to hypokalemia.
Diuretics, corticosteroids
May increase risk of electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia).
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and significant fluid and electrolyte loss. Management involves supportive care, fluid and electrolyte replacement.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally not recommended during pregnancy or lactation unless clearly necessary and advised by a doctor. Limited human data.
