Description
Overview of the medicine
Laxod 500 mg Tablet contains Calcium Polycarbophil, a bulk-forming laxative. It works by absorbing water in the intestines to form a bulky stool, which helps to stimulate bowel movements and relieve constipation. It is also used to help maintain regularity in bowel movements.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initially, 1-2 tablets (500-1000 mg) orally, 1-4 times daily, with a full glass of water. Dosage may be adjusted based on response. Do not exceed 8 tablets (4000 mg) in 24 hours.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but start with the lower end of the dosage range and monitor for hydration status.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal. Ensure adequate fluid intake.
How to Take
Take orally with a full glass (at least 240 ml) of water or other fluid. Adequate fluid intake is crucial to prevent choking or impaction. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium Polycarbophil is a hydrophilic polyacrylic resin that absorbs up to 60 times its weight in water, increasing stool bulk and water content. This distends the colon, stimulating peristalsis and facilitating bowel evacuation. It does not exert its effects systemically.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 12-72 hours, sometimes up to 3 days.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in feces.
Half life
Not applicable as it is not significantly absorbed.
Absorption
Minimally absorbed systemically from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the body due to minimal absorption.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Calcium Polycarbophil or any component of the formulation
- •Fecal impaction
- •Gastrointestinal obstruction
- •Abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting of unknown cause
- •Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
Drug Interactions
Oral contraceptives
Possible reduced absorption, though clinical significance is usually low. Advise alternative birth control method.
Digitalis preparations
May decrease absorption, leading to reduced efficacy. Monitor digoxin levels.
Tetracyclines/Quinolones
May decrease absorption of these antibiotics. Administer these antibiotics at least 2 hours before or after Calcium Polycarbophil.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely to cause serious systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. Symptoms may include abdominal discomfort, bloating, or excessive flatulence. Treatment is supportive; ensure adequate hydration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation as it is minimally absorbed systemically. Consult a doctor before use.
