Description
Overview of the medicine
Laxol 335 gm Oral Solution is an osmotic laxative containing Macrogol 3350 (Polyethylene Glycol) with electrolytes, used for effective bowel cleansing before medical procedures or for chronic constipation management.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For chronic constipation: A dose of 17-34 gm (equivalent to 1-2 doses from the 335 gm bulk pack if it's a multi-dose pack) dissolved in 125 ml of water, once daily. For bowel preparation: The entire 335 gm pack dissolved in 3 to 4 liters of water, consumed over several hours prior to the procedure, as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution for fluid/electrolyte imbalance.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment usually required, but use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Dissolve the required amount of powder in water as directed by the physician or package instructions. Consume orally. For bowel preparation, drink the entire solution rapidly or in portions over a specified period.
Mechanism of Action
Macrogol 3350 acts as an osmotic agent, drawing water into the colon and retaining it in the faeces. This increases stool volume, softens the stool, and stimulates bowel motility, facilitating defaecation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically 1-2 hours for bowel preparation, 24-48 hours for chronic constipation.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged in the faeces.
Half life
Not applicable due to minimal absorption; effectively passes through the GI tract.
Absorption
Minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation
- •Toxic megacolon or severe ulcerative colitis
- •Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipients
