Description
Overview of the medicine
Lemox 40 mg Syrup is an antibiotic belonging to the penicillin group, used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours, or 500 mg to 875 mg every 12 hours. Dosage for syrup form in adults is less common and should be determined by a physician.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function. Generally, the lower end of the adult dose range is considered.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is required for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min).
How to Take
For oral administration. Can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin, the active ingredient, inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys via tubular secretion and glomerular filtration.
Half life
Approximately 1-1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to penicillins or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe allergic reaction to other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., cephalosporins).
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May prolong prothrombin time, increasing the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of INR is recommended.
Allopurinol
Increased incidence of skin rash when co-administered.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives, requiring additional birth control methods.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balance. In severe cases, crystalluria leading to renal failure has been reported. Management is symptomatic and supportive, with activated charcoal or gastric lavage if recent ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe, but use with caution and only if clearly needed after consulting a physician. Small amounts are excreted in breast milk; generally considered safe for nursing infants, but monitor for diarrhea or candidiasis.
