Description
Overview of the medicine
Levocetirizine is a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergies. The XR formulation provides extended relief from seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
5 mg once daily, preferably in the evening. Swallow whole, do not chew or crush.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally needed unless renal impairment is present. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 30-49 mL/min: 5 mg every other day. For CrCl 10-29 mL/min: 5 mg twice a week.
How to Take
Leveron XR tablets are for oral administration. They should be swallowed whole with liquid, with or without food. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Levocetirizine is a potent and selective H1-receptor antagonist. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a natural substance that causes allergic symptoms.

Contraindications

- Children less than 6 years of age (for XR tablet).

Ritonavir: May increase levocetirizine exposure and thus enhance its effects. Close monitoring is advised.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness in adults and agitation and restlessness, followed by drowsiness, in children. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive, as there is no specific antidote. Gastric lavage may be considered if ingestion is recent.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Levocetirizine is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
