Description
Overview of the medicine
LG-M (Lagamoxime) 25 mg Tablet is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the third-generation cephalosporin class. It is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
25 mg every 12 hours, or as directed by physician. Duration of treatment depends on the infection severity.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is usually required unless severe renal impairment is present. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min, dosage adjustment may be necessary. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with a glass of water, with or without food. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Lagamoxime exerts its bactericidal action by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the cross-linking of peptidoglycan units, which leads to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours of administration.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged via the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
Approximately 2.5-3.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, bioavailability is approximately 60-70%. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Lagamoxime, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin (e.g., anaphylaxis).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase Lagamoxime plasma levels by reducing renal excretion.
Oral Contraceptives
May decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives; use alternative contraception.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect; monitor INR closely.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and convulsions in severe cases. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and hemodialysis if necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
