Description
Overview of the medicine
Livacin 0.5% Eye Drop is a topical antibiotic containing Levofloxacin, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye such as bacterial conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For bacterial conjunctivitis: 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake for the first 2 days, then every 4 hours while awake for the next 5 days. For corneal ulcers: Initial 1-2 drops every 30 minutes for the first 6 hours, then 1-2 drops every hour for day 1. Days 2-3: 1-2 drops every 4 hours. Days 4-end of treatment: 1-2 drops 2-3 times daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is typically required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is necessary for topical ophthalmic use, even in patients with renal impairment, due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt your head back, gently pull down your lower eyelid, and instill the prescribed number of drops into the conjunctival sac. Do not allow the dropper tip to touch your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is relatively rapid, with bacterial inhibition occurring within minutes to hours of administration.
Excretion
If systemically absorbed, it is primarily excreted via the kidneys in urine.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical ocular use due to minimal systemic absorption. Systemic half-life of levofloxacin is approximately 6-8 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after topical ocular administration. Peak plasma concentrations are very low, suggesting limited systemic exposure.
Metabolism
Levofloxacin undergoes minimal metabolism; it is primarily excreted as the unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the formulation.
- Viral or fungal eye infections.
Drug Interactions
Other topical ophthalmic solutions
Avoid concurrent use with other topical ocular medications without consulting a doctor. If multiple eye medications are used, administer them at least 5-10 minutes apart to prevent dilution and ensure proper absorption.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with topical ocular administration. If accidentally swallowed, contact a poison control center or seek medical attention.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a healthcare professional before use.
