Description
Overview of the medicine
Lopan 10 mg Tablet is a benzodiazepine medication used to treat anxiety disorders, insomnia, and certain types of seizures. It works by affecting specific receptors in the brain to produce a calming effect. The 10 mg strength is typically used for severe conditions or specific medical scenarios.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For anxiety: Typically 2-3 mg administered 2 or 3 times a day. For severe anxiety, up to 10 mg daily in divided doses may be considered. For insomnia: 2-4 mg at bedtime. Note: 10 mg is a high single dose for oral use and should be used with extreme caution for specific severe indications under medical supervision.
Elderly
Initially 1-2 mg daily in divided doses, increasing cautiously if needed. Lower doses are generally recommended due to increased sensitivity and potential for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised, and lower doses may be considered.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with or without food. Swallow whole with water. Do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Lorazepam, the active ingredient in Lopan, enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that inhibits brain activity. This results in sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action for anxiety relief is typically within 20-30 minutes orally.
Excretion
Excreted mainly by the kidneys as glucuronide conjugates.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 10-20 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver via glucuronidation to inactive compounds.
