Overview of the medicine
Loril (Lorazepam) is a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety disorders, insomnia, and sometimes as a pre-anesthetic medication or for acute seizures.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Anxiety: 1-4 mg per day in divided doses. Insomnia: 1-2 mg at bedtime.
Elderly
Initially 0.5-1 mg per day in divided doses, adjusted as needed.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment may be necessary; use with caution.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. For insomnia, take shortly before bedtime. Do not crush or chew tablets.
Mechanism of Action
Lorazepam enhances the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter, in the brain. This results in sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.

Storage

Overdose
Symptoms include somnolence, confusion, dysarthria, paradoxical reactions, and coma. Management involves supportive care, maintaining a patent airway, and monitoring vital signs. Flumazenil may be used as an antidote but carries risks.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category D. Lorazepam can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. It is excreted in human milk and can cause sedation and feeding difficulties in nursing infants. Not recommended.
