Description
Overview of the medicine
Lotepro-05 Suspension is an ophthalmic corticosteroid used to treat inflammation and pain associated with ocular surgery or seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For post-operative inflammation: Instill 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) four times daily, starting 24 hours after surgery and continuing for 2 weeks. For allergic conjunctivitis: Instill 1 drop into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) four times daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but use with caution due to potential increased susceptibility to side effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Shake well before use. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Loteprednol etabonate is a 'soft' corticosteroid. It works by inhibiting inflammatory mediators (e.g., prostaglandins, leukotrienes) and reduces capillary permeability, thereby decreasing inflammation, swelling, and pain.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief of symptoms typically within a few days.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys as inactive metabolites.
Half life
Plasma half-life of metabolites is short, typically less than 30 minutes, due to rapid metabolism.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after ocular administration. Primarily active at the local site.
Metabolism
Rapidly metabolized to inactive metabolites by esterases in the eye and systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (e.g., Herpes simplex keratitis, vaccinia, varicella)
- Mycobacterial infection of the eye
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication
Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions reported with ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption.
However, inform your doctor about all other eye medications you are using.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Due to the topical nature and minimal systemic absorption, an acute overdose is unlikely. If accidentally ingested, seek medical advice.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor.
