Adults
One drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment needed.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed.
How to Take
Apply one drop to the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications. Remove contact lenses before application and reinsert after 15 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Bimatoprost lowers intraocular pressure by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor through both the uveoscleral pathway and the trabecular meshwork.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 4 hours
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 45 minutes (systemic)
Absorption
Well absorbed through the cornea and conjunctiva. Peak plasma concentration reached within 10 minutes.
Metabolism
Metabolized primarily by beta-oxidation, desamidation, and glucuronidation to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Bimatoprost or any component of the preparation
- Patients with a history of severe ocular inflammation
Drug Interactions
Other prostaglandin analogs
Reduced IOP lowering effect may occur when used with other prostaglandin analogs. Avoid concomitant use of multiple prostaglandin analogs.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15°C to 25°C or 59°F to 77°F). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.

Clinical Trials
Extensive clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of Bimatoprost 0.03% in reducing elevated intraocular pressure. Key trials often focus on sustained IOP reduction and safety profile, including long-term studies.
Lab Monitoring
- Regular monitoring of intraocular pressure (IOP)
- Ophthalmological examination for changes in iris pigmentation, eyelash growth, and macular edema
Doctor Notes
- Educate patients on proper eye drop instillation technique to avoid contamination and maximize efficacy.
- Advise patients about the potential for permanent iris color changes, eyelid skin darkening, and increased eyelash growth.
- Regularly monitor IOP and assess for any signs of ocular inflammation or macular edema, especially in patients with risk factors.
Patient Guidelines
- Wash hands thoroughly before use
- Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface (eye, finger, etc.) to avoid contamination
- Remove contact lenses before application and reinsert after 15 minutes
- Report any persistent eye symptoms, irritation, or changes in vision immediately to your doctor
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, continue with the next dose as scheduled. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
Driving Precautions
May cause temporary blurred vision or other visual disturbances upon instillation. Patients should be advised to exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until vision clears.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain regular follow-up appointments with your ophthalmologist for IOP monitoring
- Avoid rubbing eyes, as this can worsen irritation or lead to infection
- Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect eyes from light sensitivity if experienced
