Description
Overview of the medicine
Lumilast (Bilastine) is a non-sedating, long-acting H1-antihistamine used for the symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
20 mg once daily. Administer one hour before or two hours after food or fruit juice.
Elderly
No dose adjustment is required in elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment.
Hepatic_impairment
No dose adjustment is required in patients with hepatic impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, on an empty stomach (one hour before or two hours after food/fruit juice). Do not take with food or grapefruit juice as this can reduce effectiveness.
Mechanism of Action
Bilastine acts as a selective H1-receptor inverse agonist, blocking the effects of histamine and thereby reducing allergic symptoms like itching, sneezing, and watery eyes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Approximately 95% excreted unchanged, with about 33% in urine and 67% in feces.
Half life
Approximately 12-24 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentration (Cmax) is reached in about 1.3 hours. Food and grapefruit juice significantly reduce bioavailability.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized by the liver, and does not interact with the cytochrome P450 system.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to the active substance (Bilastine) or to any of the excipients.
Drug Interactions
Grapefruit juice
Reduces the bioavailability of Bilastine. Avoid co-administration.
Ketoconazole, Erythromycin, Diltiazem, Cyclosporine, Ritonavir
These P-glycoprotein inhibitors can increase Bilastine plasma levels, potentially increasing side effects. Use with caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be given. No specific antidote is known for Bilastine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Limited data on use in pregnant women. Animal studies do not indicate direct or indirect harmful effects. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is unknown if Bilastine is excreted in human milk; a decision should be made whether to discontinue breastfeeding or discontinue Lumilast therapy.
