Description
Overview of the medicine
Lupred 0.5% Eye Drop contains Prednisolone Acetate, an ophthalmic corticosteroid, used to treat inflammatory conditions of the eye, such as allergic conjunctivitis, uveitis, and post-operative inflammation. It reduces swelling, redness, and itching.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1-2 drops into the conjunctival sac 2-4 times daily. In severe cases, dosage may be increased to 1-2 drops every hour until improvement, then gradually tapered.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Shake well before use. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination. Apply pressure to the tear duct for one minute after administration to reduce systemic absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Prednisolone Acetate acts by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and suppressing the immune response. It reduces capillary permeability and leukocyte migration, thereby decreasing inflammation, swelling, and pain in the eye.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Anti-inflammatory effects typically begin within a few hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine if systemically absorbed.
Half life
Not well-defined for ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption; local effects persist for several hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after ophthalmic administration. Local ocular absorption is effective.
Metabolism
Metabolized primarily in the liver if systemically absorbed, but local metabolism in ocular tissues may occur.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Acute untreated purulent ocular infections
- Acute superficial herpes simplex keratitis
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures
- Vaccinia, varicella, and most other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication
Drug Interactions
Anticholinergics
May increase intraocular pressure when used with corticosteroids.
NSAIDs (topical)
Concomitant use with topical NSAIDs may increase the potential for corneal healing problems.
Storage
Store upright at controlled room temperature (15-30°C). Protect from light and freezing. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to limited systemic absorption. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Prednisolone is excreted in human milk, use with caution in nursing mothers.
