Description
Overview of the medicine
Lurex 30 mg Syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up. It is commonly used in respiratory conditions such as acute and chronic bronchopulmonary diseases associated with abnormal mucus secretion and impaired mucus transport.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years: 10 ml (60 mg) twice daily or 5 ml (30 mg) three times daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required, but caution in patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
A reduction in dose or an increase in the interval between doses may be necessary in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration. May be taken with or without food. Use a measuring spoon or cup for accurate dosage.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol acts as a mucolytic by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharide fibers and stimulating the production of less viscous mucus, thereby facilitating mucociliary clearance. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Within 30 minutes to 2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily renally (approx. 90% as metabolites).
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any component of the formulation.
- Hereditary fructose intolerance (due to sorbitol in some formulations).
Drug Interactions
Antitussives (e.g., dextromethorphan)
Concomitant use with antitussives may lead to a dangerous accumulation of bronchial secretions due to inhibition of the cough reflex.
Antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline)
Ambroxol can increase the penetration of some antibiotics into bronchial secretions, potentially enhancing their effect.
Storage
Store below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include gastrointestinal disturbances. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
