Description
Overview of the medicine
Lutison 2 mg suspension is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid primarily used to treat inflammatory conditions of the eye.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 drops instilled into the conjunctival sac 2-4 times daily. Dosage may be reduced gradually as symptoms improve.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required for topical ophthalmic use.
How to Take
Shake well before use. Instill drops into the affected eye(s) as directed by physician. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Lutison works by inhibiting phospholipase A2, thereby blocking the release of arachidonic acid and the formation of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, which are potent mediators of inflammation. It also suppresses immune response.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within a few hours.
Excretion
Metabolites excreted mainly in urine and feces.
Half life
Not precisely determined for topical ophthalmic; short systemic half-life if absorbed.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following topical ophthalmic administration.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver, also locally in ocular tissues.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Acute untreated purulent bacterial, viral, fungal, or mycobacterial infections of the eye.
- Hypersensitivity to Lutison or any component of the formulation.
- Vaccinia, varicella, and most other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva.
Drug Interactions
Systemic corticosteroids
Increased risk of systemic side effects if significant systemic absorption occurs.
Anticholinergics (e.g., atropine)
May increase intraocular pressure.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic treatment may be required.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution; consult a physician. Systemic absorption is minimal, but risks versus benefits should be evaluated.
