Description
Overview of the medicine
Magmax 365 mg tablet contains Magnesium Oxide, a mineral supplement used to prevent and treat low blood magnesium levels. It can also be used as an antacid for heartburn or indigestion, and as a laxative for short-term relief of constipation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For Magnesium deficiency: 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by physician. For Antacid/Laxative: 1-4 tablets daily, or as needed, not exceeding recommended daily intake.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution should be exercised in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with extreme caution. Dosage reduction may be necessary, and monitoring of serum magnesium levels is recommended. Not recommended for severe renal failure.
How to Take
Take tablets orally with water, with or without food. For antacid effect, chew thoroughly before swallowing if not coated. For laxative effect, take with a full glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Magnesium is a vital mineral for many bodily functions, including nerve and muscle function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. As an antacid, it neutralizes stomach acid. As a laxative, it draws water into the intestines, softening stools and promoting bowel movements.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
As an antacid: within minutes. As a laxative: 0.5 to 6 hours. For deficiency: gradual over days to weeks.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys (urine). Unabsorbed magnesium is excreted in feces.
Half life
Primarily eliminated by the kidneys; half-life is not clearly defined for oral supplementation but depends on renal function.
Absorption
Approximately 25-60% absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, depending on dose and magnesium status. Absorption increases with deficiency.
Metabolism
Not metabolized; magnesium is an ion.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to magnesium salts
- Severe renal impairment/failure
- Intestinal obstruction
- Appendicitis
- Myocardial damage
- Severe heart block
Drug Interactions
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
May increase magnesium excretion, leading to potential deficiency.
Bisphosphonates (e.g., Alendronate)
Magnesium can interfere with the absorption of bisphosphonates. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Neuromuscular Blockers (e.g., Vecuronium)
Magnesium may potentiate the effect of neuromuscular blockers.
Calcium Channel Blockers (e.g., Amlodipine)
May enhance hypotensive effects.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones (e.g., Ciprofloxacin)
Magnesium can reduce the absorption of these antibiotics. Take magnesium at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after these medications.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose (hypermagnesemia) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, muscle weakness, hypotension, bradycardia, CNS depression, and in severe cases, respiratory depression, coma, and cardiac arrest. Treatment involves immediate discontinuation, supportive care, intravenous fluids to promote renal excretion, and in severe cases, intravenous calcium gluconate to counteract cardiac effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when used at recommended doses, but always consult a doctor before use.

Lab Monitoring
- Serum magnesium levels (especially in patients with renal impairment or those receiving high doses)
- Renal function tests
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients to report symptoms of hypermagnesemia, especially if they have underlying renal issues.
- Counsel on potential drug interactions, particularly with antibiotics and bisphosphonates.
- Emphasize that this is not a treatment for severe magnesium deficiency requiring parenteral administration.
Patient Guidelines
- Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting a doctor.
- Drink plenty of water when using as a laxative.
- Report severe diarrhea or unusual muscle weakness to your doctor.
- Avoid taking with certain antibiotics and bisphosphonates; maintain a time gap.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Magmax 365 mg tablet is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness or severe side effects, avoid driving.
Lifestyle Advice
