Description
Overview of the medicine
Magnolax 300 mg Emulsion is an osmotic laxative used for the short-term relief of occasional constipation. It works by drawing water into the intestines, softening the stool and promoting bowel movements. It can also be used as an antacid.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For constipation: 30-60 mL (containing 2.4-4.8 g magnesium hydroxide) orally, once daily at bedtime or in divided doses. As an antacid: 5-15 mL orally as needed.
Elderly
Same as adult dose, but caution is advised due to potential for electrolyte imbalance or renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; avoid in severe renal impairment due to risk of hypermagnesemia.
How to Take
Shake well before use. Take orally, preferably with a full glass of water. Can be taken with or without food. For constipation, it is often recommended at bedtime.
Mechanism of Action
Magnesium hydroxide acts as an osmotic laxative by drawing water into the colon, increasing the volume and softening the stool, thereby stimulating bowel motility. As an antacid, it neutralizes stomach acid.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Laxative effect: 30 minutes to 6 hours. Antacid effect: within minutes.
Excretion
Unabsorbed magnesium is excreted in feces; absorbed magnesium is excreted renally.
Half life
Not applicable for its laxative action; systemic absorption is minimal.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; the small amount absorbed is rapidly excreted by the kidneys.
Metabolism
Not metabolized; acts locally in the GI tract.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to magnesium hydroxide
- •Severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or other symptoms of appendicitis or undiagnosed abdominal pain
- •Bowel obstruction or perforation
- •Severe renal impairment
Drug Interactions

Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include severe diarrhea, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance (especially hypermagnesemia in patients with impaired renal function). Treatment involves discontinuation of the product, supportive care, and correction of fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for occasional use during pregnancy and lactation, but consult a doctor before use. Prolonged or high-dose use is not recommended.
