Description
Overview of the medicine
Malferin 30 mg capsule is an iron supplement used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia. It helps in the formation of red blood cells and maintaining general health.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
One capsule daily, preferably with a meal, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, close monitoring for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; consult a physician.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with a meal or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Avoid taking with milk, tea, or coffee as they can inhibit iron absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. Malferin provides elemental iron necessary for hemoglobin synthesis and effective oxygen transport.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Hemoglobin levels typically begin to rise within 2-4 weeks.
Excretion
Mainly through feces, sweat, urine, and sloughed cells; minimal active excretion.
Half life
Not applicable to elemental iron, as it's utilized and stored.
Absorption
Absorbed primarily in the duodenum and upper jejunum, absorption rate depends on iron stores and dietary factors.
Metabolism
Iron is not metabolized in the traditional sense; it's incorporated into hemoglobin or stored.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder).
- Hemosiderosis.
- Known hypersensitivity to iron preparations.
Drug Interactions
Antacids
Reduce iron absorption; take iron 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids.
Levothyroxine
Iron can reduce absorption of levothyroxine; separate doses by 4 hours.
Tetracycline antibiotics
Reduce absorption of both iron and tetracycline; separate doses by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include severe nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and in severe cases, metabolic acidosis, shock, and liver damage. Treatment involves gastric lavage, supportive care, and chelation therapy with deferoxamine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Often recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to increased iron requirements. Consult a physician for appropriate dosage.
