Description
Overview of the medicine
Mapez 3 mg Tablet contains Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist used for the prevention and long-term treatment of asthma and for the relief of symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking leukotrienes, which are natural substances that cause narrowing and swelling of airways in the lungs, and also contribute to allergy symptoms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For children 2 to 5 years of age: 3 mg (chewable tablet) orally once daily in the evening. For asthma, this dose is recommended for patients aged 6 months to 5 years.
Elderly
Not applicable for this strength; elderly dosage for Montelukast is usually 10 mg.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for patients with renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally once daily in the evening. For chewable tablets, chew completely before swallowing. Can be taken with or without food. Continue treatment even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Montelukast selectively inhibits the CysLT1 receptor, thereby blocking the action of leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4). Leukotrienes are potent inflammatory mediators released from various cells, including mast cells and eosinophils, and cause bronchoconstriction, increased vascular permeability, and inflammatory cell infiltration, which contribute to asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement may be seen within one day.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in feces via bile (approximately 86%), with less than 0.2% excreted in urine.
Half life
Approximately 2.7 to 5.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Mean oral bioavailability is 64%.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP3A4, CYP2C9, and CYP2C8.
