Description
Overview of the medicine
Maxical-M Tablet is a combination of calcium carbonate, vitamin D3, and magnesium, used to support bone health and address deficiencies of these essential minerals and vitamins.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 tablets daily, preferably with meals or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, or as advised by a physician, with consideration for renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and dose adjustment may be necessary. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with a sufficient amount of water, preferably after meals to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium is essential for bone formation and maintenance. Vitamin D3 facilitates the absorption of calcium from the gut. Magnesium contributes to bone structure and is involved in numerous enzymatic reactions in the body.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Chronic effect, not acute. Benefits are seen with consistent long-term use.
Excretion
Calcium is excreted via kidneys and feces. Vitamin D3 metabolites are excreted via bile and feces. Magnesium is primarily excreted via the kidneys.
Half life
Vitamin D3 has a long half-life. Calcium and magnesium levels are tightly regulated in the body.
Absorption
Calcium absorption is variable and vitamin D-dependent. Vitamin D3 is fat-soluble and absorbed from the gut. Magnesium is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Vitamin D3 is metabolized in the liver and kidneys. Calcium and magnesium are not metabolized but exist as ions in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in blood)
- •Hypermagnesemia (high magnesium levels in blood)
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Tetracyclines
Calcium and magnesium can reduce the absorption of tetracyclines.
Loop Diuretics
May increase urinary excretion of calcium, potentially leading to hypocalcemia.
Anticonvulsants
Certain anticonvulsants may reduce vitamin D3 levels.
Bisphosphonates
Calcium can reduce the absorption of bisphosphonates.
Fluoroquinolones
Calcium and magnesium can reduce the absorption of fluoroquinolones.
Thiazide Diuretics
May increase serum calcium levels.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include hypercalcemia, hypermagnesemia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and in severe cases, kidney stones or renal failure. Management involves discontinuation of the supplement and supportive care.
