Description
Overview of the medicine
Mazic 10 mg Syrup contains Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid production. It treats conditions like heartburn, acid reflux, ulcers, and erosive esophagitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 20 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks, or as directed by physician. For Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, dosage may be higher.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally needed, but caution advised due to potential for reduced hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment necessary for patients with impaired renal function.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably in the morning before breakfast. Do not crush or chew if it's a suspension/granule formulation intended for specific administration.
Mechanism of Action
Omeprazole works by irreversibly binding to and inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system (the proton pump) in gastric parietal cells, thereby blocking the final step of acid secretion.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour, maximal effect within 2 hours.
Excretion
Approximately 80% is excreted as metabolites in the urine and about 20% in the feces.
Half life
0.5-1 hour (terminal half-life), but duration of acid suppression is much longer (up to 72 hours) due to irreversible binding.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, though absorption may be delayed by food. Bioavailability is about 30-40% but increases with repeated dosing.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 enzymes.
