Description
Overview of the medicine
Meczin 50 mg Tablet contains Meclizine, an antihistamine with antiemetic and antivertigo properties. It is primarily used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and vertigo associated with motion sickness and various vestibular disorders.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For motion sickness: 25-50 mg orally, 1 hour prior to travel. May be repeated once daily if needed. For vertigo: 25-100 mg daily in divided doses, depending on patient response.
Elderly
Initiate at the lower end of the dosing range due to increased sensitivity and potential for anticholinergic side effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustments are usually recommended, but use with caution due to potential accumulation of metabolites. Monitor for adverse effects.
How to Take
Take Meczin 50 mg Tablet orally with or without food. It can be chewed or swallowed whole. For motion sickness, it should be taken 1 hour before travel.
Mechanism of Action
Meclizine acts as an H1-receptor antagonist in the central nervous system, particularly in the vestibular and cerebellar pathways, inhibiting histamine's effects. Its anticholinergic properties also contribute to its antiemetic and antivertigo effects by blocking muscarinic receptors in the brain.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 1 hour.
Excretion
Excreted in urine and feces, predominantly as metabolites.
Half life
Plasma half-life is approximately 6 hours, but its clinical effects may last for 8-24 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver, likely via CYP2D6.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to meclizine or any component of the formulation.
- Patients with severe liver disease or angle-closure glaucoma (due to anticholinergic effects).
- Prostate enlargement or urinary retention.
Drug Interactions
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
May prolong and intensify the anticholinergic effects of meclizine.
CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers)
May enhance the sedative effects of meclizine.
Anticholinergic drugs (e.g., atropine, tricyclic antidepressants)
May increase anticholinergic side effects such as dry mouth, blurred vision, and urinary retention.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, confusion, ataxia, coma, seizures, dry mouth, flushed skin, dilated pupils, and tachycardia. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic, including gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and measures to maintain vital functions.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown a risk, but well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use only if clearly needed. It is not known whether meclizine is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
