Overview of the medicine
Cefunix (Cefuroxime Axetil) is a broad-spectrum, semi-synthetic, second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250 mg twice daily for 7-10 days (uncomplicated UTI, pharyngitis, tonsillitis); 500 mg twice daily for more severe infections.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Oral administration, preferably with food to enhance absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Cefunix inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.

Approximately 1.2 to 1.6 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration and hydrolyzed to cefuroxime. Food enhances absorption.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the liver. Hydrolyzed in the intestinal mucosa and blood.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or any component of the formulation
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases cefuroxime levels by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (advise additional contraception).
Storage
Store below 30°C, in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management is supportive. Hemodialysis can reduce serum levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during lactation; excreted in breast milk in small amounts.
