Description
Overview of the medicine
Meflocin-03 Eye Drop contains Moxifloxacin 0.3%, a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid, and instill one drop into the conjunctival sac. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement often observed within a few days.
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally if systemically absorbed; otherwise, washed out from the eye with tears.
Half life
Ocular tissue half-life is short, systemic half-life around 12-15 hours (though systemic exposure is minimal from eye drops).
Absorption
Following topical ophthalmic administration, Moxifloxacin is absorbed into the ocular tissues. Systemic absorption is minimal.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism occurs in ocular tissues. Primarily excreted unchanged if absorbed systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolones, or to any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic preparations
If using other ophthalmic medications, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
An ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. In case of accidental ingestion or excessive ocular application, flush the eyes with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution is advised during lactation as moxifloxacin is excreted in human milk after systemic administration; however, systemic exposure from ophthalmic drops is very low.
