Description
Overview of the medicine
Melphin contains Meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, swelling, and stiffness from arthritis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Osteoarthritis: 7.5 mg once daily, max 15 mg/day. Rheumatoid arthritis/Ankylosing spondylitis: 15 mg once daily.
Elderly
Generally 7.5 mg once daily, adjust based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min) not recommended. For mild to moderate, generally 7.5 mg once daily.
How to Take
Taken orally, once daily, with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Meloxicam inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by primarily inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), leading to reduced inflammation and pain.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Meloxicam or other NSAIDs
- History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
- Active gastrointestinal bleeding or ulceration
- Severe hepatic impairment
- Severe renal impairment not on dialysis
- Third trimester of pregnancy
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Increased lithium plasma levels.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate toxicity.
ACE inhibitors/ARBs
Increased risk of renal impairment.
Diuretics (Furosemide)
Reduced diuretic and antihypertensive effects.
Anticoagulants (Warfarin)
Increased risk of bleeding.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, GI bleeding. Severe cases may lead to hypertension, acute renal failure, respiratory depression, and coma. Management is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C (first and second trimesters), Category D (third trimester). Avoid in late pregnancy due to potential for premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus. Use with caution during lactation; small amounts may pass into breast milk.
