Description
Overview of the medicine
Methasol-N eye drop is a combination medication containing a corticosteroid (Dexamethasone) to reduce inflammation and an aminoglycoside antibiotic (Neomycin Sulfate) to treat bacterial infections in the eye. It is used to manage ocular inflammatory conditions where bacterial infection is present or there is a risk of bacterial infection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) 3-4 times daily, or as directed by a physician. The frequency may be reduced as the condition improves.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment is required for topical ophthalmic use, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and instill the prescribed number of drops into the conjunctival sac. Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye or any other surface. Close the eye gently for a few moments. If more than one ophthalmic product is being used, administer them at least 5 minutes apart.
Mechanism of Action
Dexamethasone acts by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators, thereby reducing swelling, redness, and itching. Neomycin Sulfate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of anti-inflammatory and antibacterial action is relatively rapid, typically within hours of administration.
Excretion
Systemic excretion is negligible. Primarily local action and degradation in ocular tissues.
Half life
Systemic half-life is not clinically significant due to minimal absorption. Local half-life in ocular tissues varies.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs after topical ophthalmic administration. Local absorption into ocular tissues provides therapeutic concentrations.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism due to very low absorption. Dexamethasone absorbed systemically is metabolized by the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Dexamethasone, Neomycin Sulfate, or any component of the formulation
- Acute purulent untreated bacterial infections of the eye
- Acute viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva (e.g., Herpes Simplex Keratitis)
- Fungal diseases of ocular structures
- Mycobacterial infections of the eye
- Vaccinia, Varicella, and most other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva
- Glaucoma (relative contraindication for prolonged use)
Drug Interactions
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If multiple eye medications are used, administer them at least 5 minutes apart to avoid washout effects. Systemic interactions are unlikely due to minimal absorption.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose with topical ophthalmic application is unlikely. If excessive drops are applied, rinse the eye with lukewarm water. Systemic effects from ocular overdose are rare.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Dexamethasone and Neomycin can be excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.
